Fat J – The name, the myth, the legend

post

Actually, that title is too dramatic. By far. But a lot of you have asked me where I got the name for Fat J Records. Some of you have even thought that it was a half-veiled drug reference (it’s not).

The name comes from my cat. My friend Denise, who I used to work with, always used to refer to Jay as “Phat J.” It was a good name for him because back in the day he was a little chubby as well as cool. The name stuck. But when I using his name for the record label, somehow using the name Phat didn’t fit (because I didn’t want anyone to think that Cara Austin sang 90’s era rap music).

It’s all about the fans, and Fat J isn’t named after you, I promise

post

Ok, so it’s day 15, and we so appreciate the positive response that we got about the blog and Fat J Records. THANK YOU for reading and caring – and feel free to send along any comments or suggestions, we would love to hear them. Also welcome are stories, pictures, comments that you would like to suggest that we include on the blog. I can’t promise that they will go up, but I will look at everything and email you back.

The funniest thing that happened in response to the announcements yesterday is that many of the people who I know whose names begin with the letter “J” were concerned that the record label was named after them. Rest assured that it wasn’t. More to come on where the name came from shortly….

Fat J Records’ bizarre ads…

post

I am still working on getting the final Website up for Fat J Records. But I have the design and the URL…it’s just getting the final pieces up there and live that I’m waiting for.

I’m not sure if you know how getting a URL and putting a site up online works. But what happens is that you buy the URL (also known as a domain name) from a company that sells domain names – the one that I use is GoDaddy.com. (I recommend them, they’re good. And there are a lot of bad domain name firms out there, so be careful if you plan to buy a URL!)

Anyway, when you’re waiting to put your new design up on that URL, they “park” that domain for you – meaning that no one else can buy it because I own it. But when it’s sitting there, waiting for me to use it, GoDaddy runs ads on the site so that if someone happens to go to that page and clicks on a link, GoDaddy makes a little bit of cash.

But the links that are up there right now are hilarious. Cara pointed this out to me last night. Next post will have a screenshot.
